Planting

At Lone Oak Tree Farm our field prep involves deep cultivating, adding nutrients, organic matter and adjusting the soil pH. Our planting methods involve root pruning, applying a bio-stimulant and a mycorrhizale (a beneficial fungus) mix. Our rows are eight feet apart and spacing varies within the row depending on the variety being planted. Usually six to nine feet. This tried and true spacing gives our trees enough room for proper growth and makes for effective use of land. We use only high-quality plants. Our trees come from reputable growers that we have developed good working relationships with over the years. We understand that to produce high-quality plants you must start with high-quality liners.

Irrigation and Fertilization

All of our fields are drip-irrigated. We provide enough water to get consistent - healthy growth, while conserving this valuable resource. We use slow-release granular fertilizers as needed to maintain plant health. We work very hard to get hearty plant growth without polluting the environment.

Pruning for Tree Health

Pruning is done to stimulate growth, maintain structure and natural shape. From shearing evergreen hollies, limbing up crapemyrtles to maintaining central leaders in oaks and maples. Our crews work diligently to maintain healthy, high-quality plants.

Spraying

We use Integrated Pest Management practices to prevent pollution, to help preserve beneficial insects, and to lower the exposure to humans and animals. Using IPM is not only environmentally responsible but is also good business. Our fire ant program consists of spreading an approved bait over the entire farm twice a year. Followed up by treating any mounds that may appear, individually. If our trees leave the fire ant quarantine area, they are treated individually to comply with USDA regulations. We also participate in the Japanese Beetle Harmonization Program and the Tropical Spider Wart Program, which allows us to expand our sales into quarantined states.

Tree Sizes

All trees from 1.5" to 8" caliper are machine dug, B&B in wire baskets and tied with nylon strapping for easier handling. Larger trees, 10" caliper and up, are contracted out and dug with Vermeer spades. Tree root balls are sized according to ANSI Z60.1-1996 (American Association of Nurserymen Standards). Summer digging is possible for most material, call for additional charges if necessary.

Spade Sizes

We have seven different tree spades to handle any tree size from 1.5" to 8" caliper.

Handling Your Trees and getting them to You

After the trees are harvested, they are placed in one of our holding areas. These areas have overhead irrigation to keep the trees moist. We also have a mist barn that shades the trees, which is key in the summer heat survival and hardening off process.

We have retained a local freight company who has the knowledge of transporting our trees for longer hauls. We still deliver with our trucks on local hauls or smaller loads.
